Anthestiria Festival

Anthestiria Festival Cyprus

The Anthestiria Flower Festival occurs annually in May in Paphos, but it is also celebrated in other cities of Cyprus, such as Limassol and Larnaca. Rooted in an ancient festival held in Athens in honor of Dionysus, Anthestiria celebrates rebirth and nature. The festival has been held in Paphos since 1992 and has become a significant cultural event, now also honoring Aphrodite.

The Anthestiria Flower Festival features a full day of colorful parades, with elaborately decorated floats and participants adorned with flowers, many holding bunches of flowers, marching to the music of the Paphos Philharmonic Orchestra. The festival also highlights Greece’s ancient heritage through artistic reenactments, such as the abduction of Persephone by Hades, as well as representations of the changing seasons.

Youth participation in the festival is high, with young people and children taking part in dance, music, and theatrical performances hosted by the Paphos Music School. They also contribute to art creations through their district schools, including floral compositions and flower crowns.
