The Descent of the Candlesticks in Sassari Italy

Every year on August 14th, Sassari marks the eve of the Feast of the Assumption by celebrating the Descent of the Candlesticks. Locally knonw as Faradda di li Candareri, this tradition dates back to the 16th century, as a vow to the Virgin Mary, and attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year. Eleven large wooden candlesticks are carried through the streets to the Church of Santa Maria di Betlem in a day full of celebration.

Every year, in the early morning, each gremio carefully decorates its wooden candlestick before gathering in the late afternoon in Piazza Castello. The procession then begins, filled with excitement and music. The gremi carry their heavy candlesticks through the streets, moving to the steady rhythm of drums. With each step and turn, the bearers perform a ritual dance to bring good fortune to the city.

Halfway along the route, the parade pauses for an important ceremony, The Integru: a new leader is chosen, a toast is shared, and the city’s banner is raised. At midnight, the procession reaches the Church of Santa Maria di Betlem. One by one, the candlesticks are brought inside in the traditional order and the final blessing is given.

Young people play an important role in the celebration, many join the gremi, and some assist with music and organization. In recent years, a special event called the Faradda dei Piccoli (“Children’s Descent”) adapted to younger participants ensures that this centuries-old tradition is passed on to the next generation.
