Limassol Carnival
Limassol Carnival Cyprus
Petrou Kai Pavlou, Limassol, Cyprus
During the carnival, a wide range of festive activities takes place, including serenading performances, traditional masquerades (known locally as “pellomaskes”), and street parties with music. The parades are a central feature, highlighted by the Grand Carnival Parade, which showcases over 150 floats and the carnival King.
In addition to the lively and joyful atmosphere, the carnival also includes political satire. For example, the “Candadori” features traditional satirical street singers performing songs commenting on current political issues. The Carnival Queen or King is often a satirical representation of a contemporary political figure.
Youth participation is a vital part of the festival. The Children’s Carnival Parade is a key highlight, promoting intergenerational engagement. Young people are also actively involved in organizing the carnival, competing in costume competitions, and creating school floats for the parades.
