Dormition of the Virgin Mary

Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greece

August 15 is one of the most sacred days in Greek Orthodoxy, commemorating the Dormition (Koimisi) of the Virgin Mary. It combines deep religious reverence with communal celebration, especially in rural and island communities like in Ikaria, Tinos, Paros or Pelion. There, the Panigyri (local festival) is a central expression of collective identity and tradition.

The Dormition of the Virgin Mary is a public holiday celebrated at the peak of summer pilgrimage. Church liturgies and candlelit processions are held, and blessings are offered.

Panigyria (local festivals) are organized, featuring feasting, dancing, and folk music. They often last overnight and express hospitality and collective joy. For example, the panigyri in Ikaria on August 15 is famous for its endurance dancing and feasting, sometimes lasting up to 48 hours.

In some areas, traditional costume processions also take place, such as the horsemen’s procession in Siatista.

Young people are encouraged to participate in these festive events, either by joining community group efforts or by dancing and celebrating in these intergenerational gatherings.
