The Ragoutsaria Festival of Kastoria is a vibrant winter carnival held annually from January 6th to 8th, beginning on Epiphany Day and ending with Pateritsa. The carnival consists of masked and costumed parades, often featuring satirical or humorous themes. Participants form lively groups called bouloukia, each accompanied by its own brass band, giving a unique rhythm to the celebrations. Traditional dances, songs, and theatrical performances also fill the streets.

The parade symbolizes the balance between chaos and order — a reflection of winter’s end and nature’s renewal — while remaining deeply connected to its Dionysian roots.

Young people are encouraged to take part, blending traditional and contemporary forms of expression throughout the parades. This intergenerational exchange keeps the spirit of Ragoutsaria alive and ensures the tradition continues for generations to come.
