Festival of Polyphonic Song

Festival of Polyphonic Song Greece

The Polyphonic Festival takes place annually in many villages across Greece and Albania during the months of July and August. It honors Epirotic polyphonic singing, an ancient vocal tradition that is primarily promoted by the “Polyphonic Caravan” project. Deeply rooted in community life, these songs reflect themes of migration, love, struggle, and memory.

During each event, polyphonic singing performances are held by multiple groups. Each village adds its own stylistic variation and social context, showcasing the diversity within the Epirotic polyphonic tradition. The practitioners have distinct vocal roles, such as the “taker,” “turner,” and “spinner.”

The performances are accompanied by Panigyria, traditional village feasts featuring dancing and communal meals. Handmade crafts and local dishes are displayed, and participants wear traditional Epirotic costumes.

The youth are deeply engaged in these traditional festivities, as the songs are passed down orally through generations. The festival also brings together young and elder practitioners, who share their stories to ensure the transmission of heritage and memory. The Polyphonic Caravan Project was even inscribed on the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices by UNESCO.
