Kataklysmos Festival

Kataklysmos Festival Cyprus

The Kataklysmos Festival, also known as the Festival of the Flood, is the largest and oldest public celebration in Cyprus. It takes place annually in late May or early June. Rooted in both Christian and Hellenistic traditions, it commemorates Noah's Flood while also dedicating waterfront feasts and rituals to Aphrodite and Adonis.

This five-day celebration features numerous traditional activities, including water-based competitions such as swimming contests and boat races, the religious ceremony of the “Blessing of the Waters”, and various traditional dance performances. Feasts, craft exhibitions, poetic duels known as 'Tsiattista', and theatrical performances also take place, all accompanied by live music concerts.

A popular custom consists of sprinkling water on one another when least expected, which is both a playful activity and a symbolic act representing the purification of body and soul.

Youth participation in the festival is particularly high, as young people take part in many of the performances, and even children are actively involved throughout the celebrations.
