Autumn in Barbagia is an annual festivity that takes place every weekend from early September through December, with each weekend hosted in a different village. During these gatherings, families open their historic homes to visitors and showcase their customs in an event known as “Cortes Apertas” (“Open Courtyards”). Artisans can demonstrate local crafts like Sardinian basket weaving, and visitors can try traditional foods, such as seadas and local cheeses.

The event is accompanied by folk music and traditional dances, like the ballu tundu (a round dance), which create a joyful and festive atmosphere. Some towns also include sacred or seasonal rituals, such as autumn harvest blessings.

Young people are deeply committed to organizing the events, especially in smaller villages where strong community involvement is essential. They assist local artisans during demonstrations and act as guides for visitors. Schools also often participate through field trips. Overall, the event fosters intergenerational exchange, allowing youth to learn from elders through hands-on activities.
